A magnetic liquid born from NASA Ferrofluid was invented in the 1960s by a NASA engineer, Steve Papell, who was looking for a way to move fuel in weightless space. The idea: to make a liquid sensitive to magnetic fields to control it without a mechanical pump. The result is a colloid composed of magnetite nanoparticles (an iron oxide) suspended in a carrier liquid, stabilized by a surfactant to prevent them from clumping together.

How does it work? When a magnet approaches the ferrofluid, the magnetic nanoparticles instantly align with the magnetic field. This creates characteristic spiked shapes called Rosensweig instability — these bristling peaks that give ferrofluid its unique appearance. The stronger the magnetic field, the more pronounced and spectacular the shapes.

Scientific and industrial applications Beyond aesthetics, ferrofluid is used in many fields: cooling high-fidelity loudspeakers, lubricating hard drives, medical imaging (MRI), and even in some cancer treatments. It is a material that is both poetic and profoundly useful.
